Claudia Santos Cruz and António Queiroz Martins represent Morais Leitão at the IBA 2025 Annual Conference in Toronto

Claudia Santos Cruz, ML partner / MDR Consultant and António Queiroz Martins, ML Managing Associate, will be representing the Morais Leitão Legal Circle network at the International Bar Association’s (“IBA”) Annual Conference taking place in Toronto between 2 to 8 November.

As Vice-Chair of the IBA’s African Regional Forum and an officer of the Oil & Gas Committee, Claudia will be a speaker on the following two panels:

On Monday, 3 November, she will join the session “Climate chang – implications to maritime transports”, which will examine how the maritime industry is being regulated against climate change, and how this affects existing legal concepts (eg, force majeure) or the possibility to obtain insurance coverage. The session is chaired by Patrick Holloway (Webber Wentzel, Cape Town, South Africa) and Marco Remiorz (Arnecke Sibeth Dabelstein, Hamburg, Germany), and other panelists include Kohji Hayakawa (Atsumi & Sakai, Tokyo, Japan), Patrick Leahy (Gard North America Inc., New York, USA) and Robin Squires (Borden Ladner Gervais, Toronto, Canada).

On Tuesday, 4 November, Claudia joins the panel “Voluntary carbon markets: issues, opportunities and challenges for Africa”, which focuses on the emergence of voluntary carbon markets in the African continent, and explores the associated issues of fair regulation and challenges with credible national or continental legal frameworks, as well as the opportunities that the continent can exploit. The session is chaired by Caliis Nii Oman Badoo (Securities and Exchange Commission, Accra, Ghana) and features speakers João De Carvalho (Carbonfuture, Freiburg, Germany), Andrew Gilder (Climate Legal, Johannesburg, South Africa) and Bennet Kpentey (Sync Consult, Accra, Ghana).

António Queiroz Martins will be attending the Tax sessions as the nominated national reporter for the Tax Committee.

The IBA annual Conference 2025, which brings together almost 6000 prominent lawyers from across the globe this year, begins on 2 November.
