Paula Duarte Rocha teaches module on mediation and arbitration in Mozambique

Paula Duarte Rocha, partner at MDR Advogados, is teaching the practical component of Module 4 – Mediation and Arbitration of the first practical training programme in legal arbitration, organised by ALAM – Lusophone Association of Arbitration and Mediation and the OAM – Mozambican Bar Association.

The practical session, taking place on 22 July 2025, includes a mediation session simulation with conflicting parties and a designated mediator, followed by a joint reflection and the drafting of the respective minutes, allowing participants to apply the knowledge acquired in a realistic and collaborative setting.

The module consists of a total of 6 hours of training, with 4 hours dedicated to the practical component, taught by Paula Duarte Rocha and João Ilhão Moreira (Macau). The remaining theoretical component is delivered by Mariana Soares David, partner at Morais Leitão, on 18 and 21 July.

  • Topics covered in the training include:
  • Differences between mediation and conciliation;
  • The role of the lawyer, the mediator, and the conciliator;
  • The enforceability of the minutes;
  • Strategies to propose consensual solutions.

This module is part of a pioneering initiative involving 58 Mozambican lawyers and trainee lawyers, developed within the framework of the cooperation protocol signed between ALAM and OAM. The aim is to strengthen the technical skills of legal professionals in Mozambique and to promote alternative dispute resolution methods as effective and sustainable tools for justice.
