Claudia Santos Cruz moderates panel at the IBA 2026 Annual Conference in Copenhagen

Claudia Santos Cruz, Partner at Morais Leitão, Vice-Chair of the IBA African Regional Forum, and African Liaison Officer for the IBA Oil and Gas Committee, will be representing the Morais Leitão Legal Circle network at the International Bar Association's ("IBA") Annual Conference taking place in Copenhagen.

On Thursday, 8 October, Claudia will co-moderate the joint committee session "Fueling the future: aligning oil & gas and maritime law during volatile crosswinds", presented by the IBA's Oil and Gas Law Committee and Maritime Law Committee at the Bella Center Session Details Page | International Bar Association. She will chair the session alongside Camila Cardoso of Kincaid Mendes Vianna, Brazil.

The panel examines how oil & gas and maritime law are adapting to a period of pronounced volatility, marked by tightening crude supply, elevated prices and an especially acute shortage of alternative fuels, alongside shifting sanctions regimes affecting the "shadow fleet" of tankers operating outside conventional Western maritime oversight. It will also address the tension between decarbonisation measures, such as new carbon pricing rules for shipping, and the practical, sometimes unintended consequences these can have on trade routes and fuel choices across the sector. Speakers include Casper Dybal of Bunker Holding Group, Denmark; Christian R. Rasmussen of Maersk, Denmark; Ozim Obasi-Ibeziako of The Crest LP, Nigeria; Professor Emre Usenmez of Cambridge University, England; Peter Appel of Gorrissen Federspiel, Denmark; and Kohji Hayakawa of Atsumi & Sakai, Japan.

Claudia coordinates the firm's international Shipping practice and has represented Morais Leitão at IBA Annual Conferences in recent years, including in Mexico City, Toronto and Paris.

The IBA is the world's largest organisation of international lawyers and law firms, and this year's Annual Conference will bring together more than 6,500 lawyers from around the world in Copenhagen. Several parallel networking events are also taking place that week, including organised by Lex Mundi.

Martim Krupenski, Managing Partner of Morais Leitão, Tiago Arouca Mendes, Managing Partner of MDR Advogados, and António Queiroz Martins, from the firm's Tax department, will also be representing Morais Leitão in Copenhagen.
